Dreamworks announced that shooting began today on their Wikileaks movie entitled “The Fifth Estate.” The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange and Daniel Brühl as Daniel Domscheit-Berg. The cast also includes Laura Linney, Anthony Mackie, and David Thewlis. Bill Condon, fresh off the Twilight: Breaking Dawn Series, will direct.
The studio also released a still from the shoot, and I have to say, Benedict Cumberbatch looks about as much like Julian Assange as I do.

going to be interesting to see how this turns out
Remember when DDB said that it was okay for him to backstab Assange and Wikileaks because he was going to start up this “ethical” version of Wikileaks and it was going to be soooo much better because he, DDB, was the real programming genius and all that?
Not much happening on the OpenLeaks front. Meanwhile, Wikileaks is still up and running.
Jane, you look a *lot* more like Julian Assange.
They use the word controversial a number of times. The revelation of corruption and crimes in high places is always going to be controversial to the perpetrators.
That’s why genuine journalist’s lives are regularly in peril.
The need for the fifth estate has never been greater, nor its champions fewer in number.
Thanks for the heads up! This is a MUST SEE! Early in the Assange drama, I posted an op on Julian on the local topix board. I received a reply from a remote town in the English backwoods! (Chills!) :-)
Greetings from a new Firepup, Ms. Hamsher! :-)
P.S. – the op was titled “Julian Assange Is An Alien”. :-)
…Benedict Cumberbatch looks about as much like Julian Assange as I do…
*heh* At least you’d be a
handsomerprettier Julian, Jane…! ;-)I second that emotion! :-) still, thanks to our benfactor for turning us on to a great flick! :-)
will it be a “great flick”?? without knowing a single thing about it other than that it (probably) exists at this point, my experience tells me it will be a 1.5 to 2 hour excercise in managing the (whole disgraceful) story in a way that will be comfortable to all the passengers on the MSM propaganda barge, and simutaneously incorporate the franchise messsage, something like: “without capitalism it would be worse” or “mistakes were made but we are better off in a capitalist society” etc.,etc.,

*heh* Say it ain’t so, solerso…! ;-)
Not to disagree with the big boss or anything, but I think he looks like Assange, at least in terms of hair and slenderness.
The more important thing will be how well he (and his colleagues) act and how good the script is. Ideally the thing will have integrity, but even if it doesn’t, it will keep Assange and Wikileaks in the public eye. Not everyone follows the case as closely as we do.
I want to know who is playing Bradley Manning (whether or not Jane looks more like him), or is perhaps that aspect of the Wikileaks story not part of the movie?
Waiting to hear who is making a counter story movie…perhaps Steven Seagal as Gen. McCrystal in WikiLiars ..They embarrassed his family and now he’s out for revenge!
I’d see that movie.
You’ve said most of what I would have, better than I would have. So thanks! Only thing to add: this movie coming out of the belly of the MSM beast does not seem encouraging. Whitewash of government overreaction on behalf of folks with a whole lot to hide (including those gov’ts themselves), methinks.
Nice! Have to agree with Ms. Hamsher. Might even be able to enjoy that one with my FOX News-loving dad…
I’m sure there would be a cameo with Bill O’Reilly :)
Whatever he looks like, Cumberbatch is a hell of an actor. In everything I’ve seen him I’m in; “Sherlock”; “To the Ends of the Earth”, etc., he was excellent.
Right now, his word-of-mouth in the acting community is in process of making him a “hot property”. I’m glad they got him for this and glad he agreed to do it.
Anyone willing to hang on to THAT moniker has got to be pretty damn sure of his ability. :o)
You go, Ben!
